What is an indoor neon sign?

An indoor neon sign is lettering, a logo or an illustration used in an enclosed space, sheltered from rain, wind and direct weather. Its materials and electrical parts are chosen for that controlled setting, which is why moving the same sign outdoors later is not recommended. This category brings together LED neon, mirror / acrylic neon, glass neon and lightbox examples.

Where will the sign go?

For indoor projects the first question is placement, not technology. The options break down like this:

On a wall

The most common use. The acrylic backboard can be cut to the shape of the text, left as a rectangle, or cut per letter so the letters seem to float on the wall. Cafe walls, behind the till, reception areas and above the bed are typical spots.

Hanging from the ceiling

Good where the sign should sit away from a wall, such as above a bar or in an open-plan office. A hanging sign needs to sit on a single backboard, so ceiling hanging is not used with a cut-per-letter backboard.

In a shop window

Neon hung behind the glass works from inside while speaking to the street. Behind-the-glass use is usually treated as close to indoor, but a window that gets direct sun is assessed differently for heat and visibility. We explain where that line falls in indoor vs outdoor neon signs.

On a desk or counter

Smaller neon pieces can stand on a desk, counter or shelf with a desk stand. They are handy for receptions, checkouts and workspaces.

Which technique suits which interior?

  • LED neon: The most common choice for cafes, offices, homes and events. It is light and suits free-flowing lettering and illustrations.
  • Mirror / acrylic neon: Combines neon with a mirror in beauty salons, hair salons and dressing areas; it is for indoor use only.
  • Glass neon: For bars and restaurants that want a warm, classic glow. Because it is glass, choose a spot where it will not get knocked.
  • Lightbox: For flat content that needs to be read, such as menus, wayfinding and information panels.

A short checklist for size and placement

  • Think about the distance the sign will mostly be seen from; viewing distance, not empty wall space, decides the size.
  • Leave breathing room around the sign and make sure it does not clash with furniture, shelves or lamps.
  • Note where the nearest socket is and decide which side you want the cable to exit from.
  • Set aside a dry, ventilated spot for the adapter.

Matching the light to the room

Indoors, the same sign looks different by day and by evening. A dimmer, or a remote with dimmer, lets you adjust brightness to the room; a quiet restaurant evening and a busy shop afternoon rarely want the same setting. Warm tones such as daylight and amber feel soft in lounges and bedrooms, while cooler tones such as white and ice blue look crisp in offices and studios.

Preview it on your own wall

In Design Your Neon you can preview your design on ready-made wall and office scenes, or on a photo of your own space. When you send the design by WhatsApp or the form, we review it and share the price by WhatsApp, Instagram or phone. After your approval, the sign is made in our workshop in Kağıthane, Istanbul, and we plan delivery and installation around your space.

If you would like to send a photo of your wall with rough measurements, you can reach us through the channels on our contact page.

Frequently asked questions

LED neon is usually the choice for kids' rooms because it is light. Have the sign mounted securely, and keep the adapter and cable dry, ventilated and out of children's reach. Tell us the sign is for a kids' room when you order.

The mounting method is chosen based on the wall surface and the size of the sign. Besides wall mounting, ceiling hanging, window hanging and, for smaller pieces, a desk stand are all options. Telling us the wall type (concrete, plasterboard, glass and so on) helps us suggest the right one.

In the design you can choose whether the cable exits on the left, right or bottom; cable routing and length are discussed per project. If you need a new socket or wiring, always have an electrician do it.

Even though they are indoors, areas with humidity, steam or splashing water do not count as standard indoor conditions. Mention this before you order and we will assess suitability and placement together for your project.
