Neon Sign Care and Maintenance
Safe cleaning, sensible placement and everyday habits that keep your neon sign looking good. What owners can do, and what belongs to a professional.

Neon signs don't demand heavy upkeep. A few simple habits still help them look good and keep them pleasant to use. This guide covers the care steps an owner can safely do, and the things you should leave alone.
One boundary up front: everything here is exterior, owner-level care. Opening a sign, replacing its parts or poking at an electrical problem is not an owner's job. It belongs to the manufacturer or a qualified professional.
Before cleaning: unplug it
Every cleaning or moving job starts the same way: switch the sign off and pull the plug from the socket. Cleaning a sign that is still connected adds an unnecessary risk, both to you and to the product.
If the sign has just been on, let it cool first. That protects your hands and the surface.
How to clean: dry or slightly damp microfiber
Dust is the most common appearance problem on a neon sign, and the fix is simple.
- Unplug the sign and let it cool.
- Wipe the surface gently from top to bottom with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.
- If marks remain, lightly dampen the cloth. It should be damp, not wet enough to drip.
- Dry right away with a dry cloth.
- Make sure the sign is completely dry before plugging it back in.
What not to use
- Glass cleaner, alcohol, solvents, household cleaning products and similar chemicals. They can damage the surface, paint or material.
- Scouring pads, abrasive cloths or paper towels. They can scratch.
- Pouring water, spraying, or hosing the sign down. Wetting an electrical product is not safe.
- Blowing compressed air inside, or trying to dig out trapped dust with a tool.
If your sign has a mirror/plexi surface or a backboard, the same rule applies: dry or slightly damp microfiber is enough. For dust in corners, a soft, dry brush will do.
Adaptor and cable safety
The adaptor: keep it dry and ventilated
The adaptor (power supply) that feeds the sign can warm up while running, so where you put it matters.
- Keep it dry. Don't place it where liquids could spill or water could splash, or in a damp spot.
- Don't block its ventilation. No covering with fabric or paper, no piling items on it, no squeezing it into a tight gap.
- Don't put anything on top. No cups, plants or decorative objects.
- Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
- Look over the adaptor and socket from time to time. If you notice an unusual smell, excessive heat, crackling or discoloration, unplug it and stop using it.
Don't open or swap the adaptor yourself. If you suspect a fault, see "When to call a professional" below.
Don't crush or kink the cable
The cable is one of the most stressed parts of any sign. A few simple rules:
- Don't bend it at sharp angles or crush it under heavy objects.
- Don't let it get pinched between a door, window or furniture.
- Don't pull on the cable when carrying or shifting the sign. Hold the body.
- When unplugging, grip the plug itself, not the cable.
- When the sign is not in use, gather the cable in a loose loop instead of winding it tightly.
- If you see a cut, a dent or exposed section on the cable, don't use the sign. Contact your manufacturer or an electrician.
Also avoid overloaded power strips with many devices attached. If possible, plug the sign straight into a wall socket.
Heat and direct sun: protect indoor products
Leaning an indoor sign against a window that gets direct sun all day, or placing it right above a radiator or heater, is not a good idea. High heat and sunlight can wear materials over time.
A quick placement check:
- Is it out of direct sunlight?
- Is it away from heat sources such as heaters, stoves and cooktops?
- Is the space damp (bathroom, steamy kitchen, a leaking wall)?
- Can air move freely around it?
If you are thinking of putting a sign in a shop window or outside, first ask whether the product is suitable. We covered the differences in indoor vs outdoor neon signs. You can see options in the outdoor category on the products page.
Dimmer use and running time
Using a dimmer
If a dimmer (brightness control) came with your sign, adjusting the light to the room is a good habit. Dimming in the evening or in calm spaces such as a bedroom gives a softer atmosphere and avoids running the sign brighter than you need.
Before adding a dimmer or controller that did not come with your product, ask your manufacturer. Not every device suits every sign.
How long should it stay on?
It would not be right to give one hour limit for everyone, because product type, location and installation vary. These general habits are sensible:
- Switch it off when you don't need it. Leaving it on all night with nobody around has no benefit.
- Make unplugging a habit when you leave home or won't use it for a long time.
- If you need the sign on continuously for business use, tell your manufacturer in advance and ask about suitable usage for that product.
Moving, mounting and support
Care when moving and mounting
When relocating a sign, unplug it, let it cool before winding the cable, and hold it by the body with both hands. Avoid hard knocks. If you need to transport it, use the original packaging or soft protective wrapping.
Wall mounting needs attention to weight and fixing points. Use the mounting setup that came with the sign, and ask the manufacturer if you are unsure.
When to call a professional
If you notice any of the following, unplug the sign and stop using it:
- Flickering, blinking, or a section that doesn't light
- Crackling, buzzing or a burning smell
- An adaptor that gets very hot
- Damage to the cable or plug
- The sign being hit, dropped or exposed to water
In these cases, do not try to open, repair or replace parts yourself. Electrical parts, especially the transformer and connections, should only be handled by people who know the work. Contact your manufacturer or a qualified electrician.
Quick care summary
- Unplug before cleaning.
- Use dry or slightly damp microfiber, no chemicals.
- Keep the adaptor dry and ventilated, and never cover it.
- Don't crush or kink the cable.
- Keep indoor products away from direct sun and heat sources.
- Don't leave it on unnecessarily, and use a dimmer to set the brightness.
- For any electrical issue, contact the manufacturer or an electrician.

Frequently asked questions
Unplug it first. Then gently wipe the surface with a dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth. Do not use chemical cleaners, solvents or abrasives, and do not soak the sign.
It depends on the product type and where it is installed. As a general habit, switch it off when you don't need it and give it an open, ventilated spot. If your product has specific usage advice, ask your manufacturer.
Unplug it and stop using it. Do not try to open or repair it yourself. Contact your manufacturer or a qualified electrician.
If a compatible dimmer came with your product, use it. Before adding a different dimmer or plug-in controller, ask your manufacturer, because not every device works with every product.
Indoor products are not designed for that. Rain, moisture and direct sun are not suitable for them. If a sign will be used outdoors, ask for an outdoor product from the start.
